Anxiety
In some ways we are defined by what we fear more than by what we love. From an evolutionary standpoint it makes sense. Fear teaches us to avoid things that might hurt us. In a sense fear is a very useful adaption designed to keep us alive.
At the same time we now live in a world where fear doesn't have the same obvious causes and consequences that it used to. We are unlikely to be attacked by a snake, chased by a neighbouring tribe or savaged by a disturbed bear. These days we are far more likely to be hunted by an angry student loan, attacked by a rent payment or trapped in traffic. Our fears today are vague, they are always present, they keep coming back to us day after day and, quite often, we have no idea how to cope with them.
Modern life can be quite overwhelming. Unlike the scare of a wild beast chasing us with the highs and lows of adrenaline followed by peace and quiet, we end up stressed out all the time. If our methods of dealing with stress aren't great it's easy to start to be overwhelmed. When that happens there are usually some knock on effects.
We might start to pretend that nothing is wrong whilst secretly hoping for a miracle, a white knight, a winning lotto ticket or some other unlikely event to save us. We might misplace all our fears and start to suffer from panic attacks or develop crippling phobias. We might even start to take up dangerous activities or addictive substances thinking that they give us a break from the things that scare us.
None of these behaviours help us in the long run, at best we manage to displace our worries or anxieties for a short time but soon enough they are back and, often enough they bring more worries with them. For example putting off a bill long enough only adds more stress while you do so.
The only good thing is that these bad habits, these fears and these anxieties, they are there to help us to cope with the world around us. They have become confused and started being a problem for us but that fear, that anxiety....it's there to help us, if we can let it.
As a hypnotherapist what I do is address that part of you that wants to help and give it an easy way to do so. I help you to retrain that old way of approaching the bad stuff so in the future you have the tools and resilience you need to cope and even thrive instead of falling back on old bad habits.
